Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company is reportedly considering a ¥1 trillion, or roughly $6.3 billion, investment in a major artificial intelligence data center in northern Japan. This potential project would mark the development of a Mubadala AI data center in Japan.
The proposed facility would be built in Akita Prefecture and could provide around 500 megawatts of capacity. That is not a modest regional server project. At that scale, it would become a significant piece of Japan’s emerging AI infrastructure and one of Mubadala’s largest individual data center bets.
Bloomberg reported the discussions on August 6, citing a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly. The investment has not been finalized, and the eventual structure may involve additional Japanese and international investors.
Why Akita Is an Unusual but Logical Choice
Most large data centers are built close to established technology and financial hubs. Tokyo and Osaka would normally attract this kind of investment.
They also come with problems.
Land near Japan’s main cities is expensive. Power availability is increasingly tight. Grid connections can take time, while the energy requirements of AI computing clusters are climbing quickly.
Akita offers a different path. The northern prefecture has more space, fewer urban constraints and potentially greater flexibility for large power-intensive developments. A 500MW project needs far more than an empty building and rows of servers. It needs dependable electricity, cooling infrastructure, fiber connectivity and long-term access to additional capacity.
Choosing a less obvious location may be the point rather than a compromise.
Mubadala May Not Fund the Project Alone
A $6.3 billion commitment would be substantial even for Mubadala, which manages a broad international portfolio across technology, infrastructure, energy and other industries.
A consortium structure appears more plausible if the development moves forward. Mubadala could serve as the lead investor while bringing in Japanese institutions, infrastructure funds, power companies or other foreign partners.
The involvement of domestic companies would also make practical sense. Building a hyperscale AI facility in Japan involves local land agreements, utility negotiations, construction partners and regulatory approvals. Capital is only one part of the job.
The original report said Mubadala may seek both domestic and international investors because of the size of the project.
Japan Needs More AI Computing Capacity
Japan wants a larger role in the AI economy, but models cannot be trained or operated without physical computing infrastructure.
That infrastructure is becoming harder to secure.
Generative AI systems require dense clusters of advanced chips, high-capacity networking equipment and enormous amounts of electricity. Companies are no longer searching only for ordinary cloud storage. They are looking for facilities capable of supporting accelerators, liquid cooling and demanding workloads that operate around the clock.
Japan’s established data center markets have struggled to expand quickly enough due partly to limited land and available power. A large Akita development could ease some of that pressure while creating a new data center region outside the country’s traditional hubs.
The UAE Is Building an International AI Infrastructure Network
The potential Japanese investment fits a wider strategy taking shape in Abu Dhabi.
UAE-backed investment groups are putting money into the physical layer beneath artificial intelligence: data centers, semiconductors, energy systems, fiber networks and cloud computing platforms.
Mubadala has already invested in operators including Princeton Digital Group, Cologix and Aligned Data Centers. It is also a founding partner of MGX, an Abu Dhabi investment company created to target AI infrastructure, semiconductors and core technology businesses.
This matters because the AI race is no longer limited to building better models. Access to chips, electricity and suitable data center capacity may decide which companies and countries can deploy those models at scale.
The UAE appears determined to own part of that foundation rather than remain a customer of infrastructure controlled elsewhere.
A 500MW Facility Would Be Enormous
Data center capacity is commonly measured by the amount of power available to computing equipment.
A planned capacity of 500MW places the proposed Akita facility in a different category from a standard corporate data center. It would be designed for hyperscale cloud platforms, AI training clusters or several large tenants operating simultaneously.
The figure also raises important questions that have not yet been answered publicly.
Where will the electricity come from? Will the site use renewable energy? How will it manage water and cooling? Which cloud or AI companies might become tenants?
Those details will determine whether the proposal becomes a viable development or remains an ambitious investment concept.
The Deal Is Still Under Consideration
No final investment decision has been announced.
That distinction matters. Large infrastructure proposals often change during negotiations, particularly when they involve billions of dollars, multiple investors, long construction schedules and major power commitments.
Still, the reported size of the Akita project shows how quickly AI infrastructure spending is escalating. Sovereign wealth funds are no longer treating data centers as background real estate. They are being approached as strategic assets tied to national technology ambitions and long-term economic influence.
A Mubadala-led facility in Japan would connect Gulf capital with Japanese land, energy and technology demand. It would also give the UAE another foothold inside one of Asia’s largest advanced economies.
The servers have not arrived. The direction of travel is already visible.
