The United Arab Emirates is accelerating its national artificial intelligence strategy with a new youth-focused program. This program is designed to prepare Emiratis for the next generation of industrial and technology jobs.

Announced during Make it in the Emirates 2026 in Abu Dhabi, the Shabab AI initiative aims to equip Emiratis aged 18 to 35 with practical AI, innovation, and problem-solving skills. The program is led by the Abu Dhabi Youth Council under the Federal Youth Authority. It is designed to move young people from basic AI awareness into real-world application.

UAE Targets Youth as AI Becomes Central to Industry

The announcement came on the final day of Make it in the Emirates 2026. There, officials emphasized that youth development is no longer just an education issue — it is now a key part of the UAE’s industrial and economic strategy.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Advisor at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the initiative is intended to give young people the skills needed to build useful and innovative AI solutions. According to the announcement, an initial Youth Lab brought together more than 71 young participants. These participants generated 133 ideas and challenges with support from more than 15 strategic partners.

Make it in the Emirates 2026 Highlights AI and Advanced Manufacturing

The UAE’s flagship industrial event has become a major platform for the country’s economic diversification plans. This year’s edition was the largest so far. There were around 1,200 exhibitors across 88,000 square metres at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi. The event covered 12 priority industries. These included advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defence, pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, and sustainable materials.

AI also played a bigger role in the 2026 edition. Organizers introduced an Intelligence Hub, a 1,400-square-metre technology showcase featuring AI, robotics, drones, electric vehicles, batteries, industrial cybersecurity, and smart manufacturing technologies.

Industrial Jobs and AI Skills Are Becoming Connected

The new Shabab AI initiative reflects a broader trend: AI is becoming part of industrial growth, not just software development.

The UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology said its Industrialist Program has already created more than 4,000 jobs across 12 industrial sectors. Officials also noted that 61% of SMEs and startups at Make it in the Emirates 2026 were youth-led. This shows how younger entrepreneurs are becoming more active in the country’s manufacturing and technology ecosystem.

This is important because AI-driven manufacturing, smart factories, robotics, and digital supply chains will require workers who understand both technology and industry.

Education System Expected to Adapt to AI

UAE officials also called for stronger alignment between education and labor market needs. Ghannam Butti Al Mazrouei, Secretary General of Nafis, urged the private sector to help shape curricula. This way, graduates are better prepared for real job requirements. Khalifa University President Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri said the university is on track to embed AI across every field by 2028.

That signals a major shift in how AI education may develop in the UAE. Instead of limiting AI to computer science, the country appears to be moving toward AI training across engineering, manufacturing, business, cybersecurity, and other sectors.

    Why This Matters

The Shabab AI initiative shows how the UAE is trying to build its AI economy from the talent pipeline up. Rather than focusing only on infrastructure, investments, or large technology partnerships, the country is also investing in young people. These young people can apply AI inside real industries.

For the global AI race, this is significant. Countries are no longer competing only on who has the most powerful AI models. They are also competing on who can train the next generation of workers, founders, engineers, and industrial leaders. These people will be able to use AI effectively.

For the UAE, the message is clear: artificial intelligence is becoming a core part of national industry. Young Emiratis are being positioned at the center of that transformation.
