Anthropic

Anthropic has launched a high-profile campaign focused on AI advertising in chatbots by purchasing commercial airtime during Super Bowl LX. The ads are scheduled to air on NBC during the championship game on Sunday. This marks Anthropic’s first appearance as a Super Bowl advertiser.

The campaign directly addresses growing debate around AI advertising in chatbots, following OpenAI’s announcement that it plans to introduce advertising inside ChatGPT. Anthropic’s ads do not name OpenAI but clearly reference chatbot interactions that include promotional messages.

Message Behind the AI Advertising in Chatbots Campaign

The commercials depict common situations where a chatbot provides a normal response before suddenly inserting a product promotion. Each ad ends with the message, “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.” Claude is Anthropic’s AI chatbot.

Anthropic stated that Claude will remain free of advertising. The company framed the campaign as a contrast to emerging ad-supported chatbot models. The ads are part of a campaign titled “A Time and a Place.”

OpenAI Response to AI Advertising in Chatbots Debate

OpenAI has confirmed plans to begin testing advertising in ChatGPT on selected tiers. The company said ads would be clearly labeled and placed at the bottom of responses. OpenAI also stated that user conversation data would not be shared with advertisers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded publicly on X. He said the Anthropic ads were humorous but described them as misleading. Altman stated that ChatGPT ads would not interrupt conversations in the way shown in the commercials.

OpenAI executives, including Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch, also commented on the campaign online.

Super Bowl Exposure and Industry Context

Super Bowl LX is expected to attract more than 100 million viewers. Anthropic’s ads place the issue of AI advertising in chatbots in front of a large mainstream audience.

The campaign comes as competition intensifies among AI developers over business models, monetization strategies, and user trust. The dispute highlights differing approaches to funding large-scale AI systems as chatbot usage continues to expand.
