Ooredoo Joins Gulf’s AI Data Center Race, Sparking New Regional Rivalry

Qatar’s leading telecom operator, Ooredoo, has officially entered the competitive race for dominance in the Gulf region’s burgeoning AI data center industry. With the demand for AI capabilities rising across industries such as healthcare, finance, and smart cities, Ooredoo’s investment in state-of-the-art AI-driven data centers positions it as a major player in this evolving technological arena.

Gulf States Betting Big on AI and Data

The Gulf region has emerged as a key battleground for AI and data infrastructure development, with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar each racing to build cutting-edge AI ecosystems. These countries are rapidly diversifying their economies away from oil, placing strategic bets on AI as a cornerstone of their digital futures.

Ooredoo’s new AI data center, set to be one of the most advanced in the region, will focus on high-performance computing (HPC) and AI-driven cloud services. The facility aims to support local industries while integrating into global AI research and innovation networks.

“Data is the new oil, and AI is the engine driving the future,” said Ooredoo CEO Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Thani at the project launch. “Our new AI data center will provide the infrastructure necessary to power tomorrow’s technologies and unlock new potential across the Middle East.”

    A Growing Regional Rivalry

Ooredoo’s move comes as the Gulf region experiences a boom in AI investments. Saudi Arabia recently launched its own AI-driven smart city project, NEOM, while the UAE’s national AI strategy is rapidly gaining momentum. The Gulf’s focus on AI is part of broader efforts to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution by investing in advanced technologies.

Ooredoo’s AI data center, set to be operational by mid-2025, will be a critical part of Qatar’s broader plans to become a regional technology hub. The center will serve the growing demand for AI applications, including machine learning, data analytics, and autonomous systems. It will also support local startups and research institutions looking to leverage AI to accelerate their innovation efforts.

“AI and data centers are at the heart of the next wave of economic transformation in the Gulf,” said Hanan Al Kuwari, a technology analyst at the Gulf Research Institute. “With Ooredoo stepping up its game, we’re seeing a clear signal that Qatar is serious about competing with its neighbors to become the AI capital of the Middle East.”

    Building a Sustainable AI Future

Ooredoo’s investment is not just about AI leadership—it’s also about sustainability. The data center is designed with energy efficiency in mind, utilizing green technologies to reduce its carbon footprint. Cooling systems powered by renewable energy sources, along with water-saving mechanisms, will make it one of the most eco-friendly data centers in the region.

“The AI revolution must also be a green revolution,” said Al Thani. “By building sustainable infrastructure, we’re ensuring that Qatar’s digital future is aligned with its environmental goals.”

A Catalyst for Qatar’s Digital Economy

Experts predict that Ooredoo’s AI data center will play a key role in advancing Qatar’s digital economy by attracting foreign investments, fostering innovation, and creating jobs. The center is expected to help industries across Qatar—from finance and logistics to healthcare—accelerate their digital transformations.

As Qatar solidifies its position in the AI-driven digital economy, Ooredoo’s latest project sets the stage for the country to be at the forefront of technological advancements, while simultaneously shaping the region’s competitive AI landscape.
