UAE Strengthens Global FinTech Position as AI Transforms Banking, Payments and Wealth Management

The UAE is accelerating its push into AI-powered financial services, attracting international FinTech companies looking to develop digital banking platforms, faster payment systems and intelligent wealth management solutions.

Executives from SC Ventures, Payten and Avaloq highlighted the country’s expanding role in financial innovation during Dubai Future Finance Week. Their message was clear: the UAE is becoming more than a regional financial centre. It is emerging as a place where companies can build financial technologies and introduce them to international markets.

Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in that transition. Banks are exploring automated fraud detection, financial advisers are using intelligent analytical tools, and payment providers are developing systems that allow businesses to receive money almost instantly.

The attraction is not limited to technology. Clearer regulatory frameworks, access to international investors and advanced digital infrastructure are encouraging financial companies to establish operations in the Emirates.

SC Ventures Expands UAE Operations With More Than 10 FinTech Businesses

SC Ventures, the innovation and venture-building division of Standard Chartered, has established more than 10 businesses headquartered in the UAE over approximately two and a half years. The figure represents a substantial share of the more than 33 ventures the company has created globally.

Mohamed Fairooz, Middle East Lead at SC Ventures, said the company has not experienced a comparable pace of venture development in its other international markets. Its UAE-based ventures focus on digital banking, digital assets, financial inclusion and financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The country’s regulatory environment and access to specialised professionals have helped support this expansion. For SC Ventures, the UAE also provides a strategic location for businesses planning to enter other Middle Eastern and international markets.

Rather than simply investing in existing financial technology companies, SC Ventures combines venture creation with strategic partnerships. This allows the company to develop new products, support emerging businesses and strengthen its position within the financial services industry.

Payten Develops Faster Digital Payments Through Aani and Jaywan

Digital payment company Payten is expanding its presence in the UAE, focusing on payment technologies designed to reduce transaction delays and improve cash flow for businesses.

The company has operated in the country since 2023 and holds four principal licences issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. Its international operations are also growing, with engagement involving 16 regulators worldwide and five regulatory licences globally.

Saad Karim, Global CEO of Payten, said the company is developing an alternative digital payments ecosystem connected to the UAE’s existing financial infrastructure, including the Aani instant payment platform and the Jaywan domestic card scheme.

One of its priorities involves QR-code payments that enable merchants to receive funds immediately rather than waiting several days for conventional settlement processes.

For smaller businesses, quicker payments can make a noticeable difference. Retailers and service providers often depend on consistent cash flow to purchase supplies, pay employees and meet daily operating expenses.

Payten believes that reducing settlement delays and transaction costs could make digital payments more practical for small and medium-sized enterprises across the UAE.

Artificial Intelligence Improves Fraud Detection and Financial Transactions

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important in payment processing, particularly as financial institutions handle larger transaction volumes and more sophisticated fraud attempts.

Payten is incorporating AI capabilities into its payment systems to improve transaction efficiency, identify suspicious activity and assess financial risks in real time.

These technologies can examine transaction patterns and flag unusual behaviour that might otherwise require lengthy manual reviews. Faster identification of potentially fraudulent payments could help financial institutions protect customers without unnecessarily slowing legitimate transactions.

However, the growing use of AI agents in financial services introduces additional responsibilities. Automated systems may eventually handle more payment-related tasks, but financial institutions must establish clear limits on what those systems can do.

Karim emphasised that banks and payment providers should remain responsible for financial transactions, even when AI agents execute parts of the process.

Defining permissions, maintaining regulatory oversight and protecting customer rights will become increasingly important as automated financial services develop.

Avaloq Brings AI-Powered Wealth Management Solutions to Dubai

Swiss banking technology company Avaloq is strengthening its regional operations as financial institutions look for more advanced tools to support investment management and private banking.

The company established its presence at the Dubai International Financial Centre approximately two years ago. Since then, it has expanded its activities in a market where banks and investment firms are increasingly interested in AI-powered financial platforms.

Akash Anand, Avaloq’s Managing Director for the Middle East, Africa and India, said the company is integrating artificial intelligence into its banking and wealth management technologies.

These tools help relationship managers examine financial information, evaluate investment opportunities and provide clients with more informed recommendations.

For wealth managers, AI could reduce the time required to process large amounts of market information and prepare financial assessments. That creates more room for advisers to focus on individual client needs and long-term investment strategies.

Avaloq does not expect artificial intelligence to replace financial professionals entirely. Anand stressed that human expertise remains essential when providing financial advice, particularly when decisions involve personal circumstances, investment risks and market uncertainty.

Cybersecurity and AI Governance Remain Major Challenges for Financial Institutions

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence also creates new concerns for banks and financial technology companies, especially when automated systems interact with sensitive customer information.

Financial institutions manage confidential records, payment details and investment portfolios. Introducing AI without appropriate safeguards could expose organisations to cybersecurity threats, operational failures and regulatory risks.

Avaloq has highlighted the importance of deploying AI within established institutional frameworks rather than allowing employees to use external AI tools independently of company policies.

Banks need clear procedures governing how artificial intelligence accesses information, produces financial recommendations and supports customer-facing services.

The challenge becomes more complicated as AI agents gain the ability to complete tasks across interconnected banking systems. Financial institutions must determine when automated decisions require human approval and how responsibility should be assigned if errors occur.

Cybersecurity is therefore becoming an essential part of AI adoption, not a separate technical concern. Financial institutions that fail to maintain customer confidence could struggle to benefit from the technologies they introduce.

AI Adoption Accelerates Across the UAE Financial Sector

The expansion of SC Ventures, Payten and Avaloq reflects a broader movement toward artificial intelligence within the UAE’s financial industry.

According to the Dubai Financial Services Authority’s 2026 AI Survey, 71% of responding authorised firms reported using at least one form of artificial intelligence, compared with 33% in 2024.

Generative AI adoption has also increased, with 67% of respondents reporting its use in 2026. Financial institutions are exploring applications across internal operations, compliance, risk management and customer services.

Emirates NBD is making substantial investments in the technology. The bank has allocated approximately half of its technology budget to AI initiatives and is developing more than 50 use cases, including applications for fraud prevention and customer support.

The investment reflects a growing recognition that artificial intelligence could influence how banks operate, manage expenses and interact with customers.

Still, widespread adoption does not necessarily mean that every financial institution has fully integrated AI into its operations. Many companies continue testing applications before expanding their use across critical banking functions.

UAE Positions Itself as a Global Centre for AI-Driven Financial Innovation

Dubai’s ambitions extend beyond individual banking projects. The Dubai International Financial Centre has announced plans to become an AI-native financial centre, integrating artificial intelligence into its regulatory environment, business operations and digital infrastructure.

The initiative aims to establish an ecosystem where financial institutions can develop and deploy AI solutions while operating within structured governance frameworks.

For international technology companies, this creates opportunities to collaborate with banks, regulators and investors in a market actively encouraging financial innovation.

The UAE’s growing FinTech sector also offers a potential launchpad for technologies intended for other countries. Companies developing payment platforms, digital banking products and wealth management solutions can use their regional operations to pursue wider international expansion.

There are challenges ahead. AI systems must demonstrate reliability, regulators need to address emerging risks, and financial institutions must balance automation with human accountability.

The companies expanding in the UAE are approaching those challenges from different directions. SC Ventures is creating new financial businesses, Payten is modernising payment infrastructure, and Avaloq is bringing intelligent tools into wealth management.

Together, their activities show how the UAE is positioning itself within the next phase of financial technology development.

The real measure of progress will be whether these innovations deliver faster transactions, more accessible financial services and stronger protection for customers.
