Jordan is preparing for a much wider digital shift across its public education system, with artificial intelligence now becoming part of the conversation. The growing focus on Jordan AI education reflects the country’s commitment to integrating new technologies into schools.
The World Bank has approved a $3.5 million grant to support preparations for a digital transformation programme covering public schools across Jordan. The work will examine whether schools have the internet connectivity, electrical infrastructure, hardware and technical readiness needed to support a more digital learning environment.
AI also features in the plan. Jordan is preparing an EdTech and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre that could support the development of digital learning tools, AI-powered educational content and teacher training.
The grant does not finance a nationwide digital rollout yet. Instead, it gives Jordan the funding to test systems, assess schools and work out what a larger programme would actually require.
Jordan Begins With a Digital Readiness Check Across Public Schools
Jordan’s first challenge is fairly basic: figuring out whether its schools are ready for a much heavier reliance on technology.
Around 3,500 public schools are expected to be assessed as part of the preparation work. Officials will examine internet availability, internal connectivity, Wi-Fi coverage, electricity, charging capacity and other infrastructure that could affect the daily use of digital learning tools.
The assessment should also reveal where the biggest gaps are. Conditions can vary significantly between schools in major cities and those operating in smaller towns or rural areas, so Jordan cannot realistically apply the same technology setup everywhere.
The preparation phase will help identify which schools need infrastructure upgrades before devices, cloud platforms or AI tools can become part of normal classroom activity.
Connectivity Pilots Will Test What Works in Different Parts of Jordan
Internet access may sound like a straightforward requirement, but reliable school connectivity is often harder to achieve than simply installing a router.
Jordan plans to test different connectivity models across schools with different sizes and locations. Urban, semi-urban and rural schools are expected to provide very different results, particularly when it comes to network reliability, speed and the cost of maintaining digital infrastructure.
These pilots should help officials understand what kind of internet capacity schools really need once hundreds of students and teachers begin using online educational platforms at the same time.
That information will matter if Jordan eventually moves toward a nationwide digital education programme. A system that works well in a small pilot classroom may behave very differently when thousands of schools are connected.
Chromebook Trials Will Explore Wider Student Device Access
Devices are another major part of Jordan’s digital education planning.
Selected schools are expected to test Chromebooks or similar devices, giving officials a chance to study how laptops perform in real classrooms rather than relying on assumptions about how students will use them.
The trials can help Jordan assess practical issues such as device distribution, maintenance, charging, storage, breakage, technical support and replacement costs. Those details become increasingly important when a programme expands from a few classrooms to thousands of schools.
Jordan already has experience with this approach. In February 2026, the Ministry of Education announced a pilot programme involving around 5,000 students from grades four to ten, supported by Google and the World Bank under the wider MASAR education programme.
The results of those earlier trials are expected to help shape decisions around a possible phased expansion of digital devices in public education.
Jordan Is Preparing an EdTech and AI Innovation Centre
The project goes beyond internet access and student laptops.
Jordan is also preparing an EdTech and Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre intended to support experimentation with emerging education technologies. The proposed centre could bring together universities, education specialists, technology companies and government institutions.
AI-powered educational content is expected to form part of that work. Jordan could use the centre to explore how artificial intelligence can support teachers, create learning materials and improve access to educational resources without simply importing tools designed for other markets.
Arabic-language content is particularly important. AI systems used in Jordanian schools need to reflect the national curriculum, local teaching methods and Arabic language requirements if they are going to be genuinely useful.
That makes the project more interesting than a straightforward technology procurement programme. Jordan appears to be considering how AI can be adapted to its own education system rather than treating existing commercial products as ready-made solutions.
Teacher Training Will Be a Major Part of the Digital Shift
Technology in classrooms only works when teachers know how to use it effectively.
Jordan’s digital education preparations therefore include professional development for teachers alongside investments in devices and infrastructure. The proposed innovation centre is expected to support training programmes that help educators understand new digital platforms and AI-supported teaching tools.
Teacher involvement could determine whether the project succeeds.
Schools can purchase thousands of devices, but those devices have limited value if teachers do not feel comfortable incorporating them into lessons. The same applies to AI. Educators need to understand where artificial intelligence is useful, where it can make mistakes and when human judgment still needs to take priority.
The World Bank has previously highlighted teacher-support applications as one of the more practical starting points for AI in education. Tools that help with lesson preparation, feedback or administrative tasks may offer immediate value without placing AI directly at the centre of student decision-making.
AI Governance and Student Privacy Are Already Part of the Discussion
Jordan is also looking at what happens to student information once digital platforms and artificial intelligence become more common inside schools.
The preparation work includes the development of a digital education framework covering AI governance, cybersecurity, data privacy and learner protection. These issues are being considered before any large-scale deployment takes place.
That timing matters.
Educational AI systems can potentially process student assignments, assessment information, behavioural data and other sensitive records. Without clear governance rules, schools could introduce technology before deciding who owns that data, where it is stored or how companies are allowed to use it.
Jordan has an opportunity to establish those boundaries early. Doing so could reduce some of the privacy and security risks that other education systems have encountered while adopting digital platforms at speed.
The $3.5 Million Grant Does Not Fund a Nationwide Rollout Yet
The size and purpose of the World Bank grant need some context.
The $3.5 million is preparation funding, rather than money for immediately putting AI systems and laptops into every public school in Jordan.
The grant will help officials understand what a larger transformation could cost, which infrastructure upgrades are required and what technical approach makes sense across different parts of the country.
That distinction is important because a full digital overhaul of thousands of schools would require considerably more funding.
Jordan is essentially using this phase to gather evidence before making larger financial commitments. The country can test technology, identify weaknesses and estimate long-term costs before attempting a national deployment.
It is a slower approach, but it may prevent expensive mistakes later.
The Project Sits Inside Jordan’s Larger MASAR Education Reform
Jordan’s digital education plans form part of a much bigger reform programme known as Jordan Pathways: Education, Skills and Administrative Reform, or MASAR.
The World Bank previously approved around $400 million in financing for MASAR, alongside additional support from the Global Concessional Financing Facility. The programme covers a broad range of education reforms, including foundational learning, technical and vocational education, administrative improvements and skills development.
Digital transformation now fits into that wider strategy.
Instead of treating AI as a separate technology initiative, Jordan is linking it with existing education reforms. That could help the government avoid building a parallel digital system that teachers and schools struggle to integrate into everyday learning.
The infrastructure assessment, Chromebook pilots and proposed AI innovation centre are therefore pieces of a much larger attempt to modernise how Jordan delivers education.
Jordan Could Become a Regional Test Case for AI in Education
Jordan’s project is still in its early stages, and there is no guarantee that every proposed component will eventually reach every public school.
Still, the approach is worth watching.
The country is not simply buying AI software and dropping it into classrooms. Jordan is looking at internet access, devices, teacher training, Arabic-language educational content, cybersecurity, privacy and AI governance at roughly the same time.
That gives the project a broader foundation than many early education technology initiatives.
If the pilots work and Jordan secures financing for a larger rollout, the country’s public school system could become an interesting regional example of how governments introduce artificial intelligence without separating it from the infrastructure and policy needed to support it.
For now, the $3.5 million grant is funding the groundwork. What Jordan learns during this stage could decide how ambitious the next phase becomes.
