OpenAI is pulling its models from Cursor after Elon Musk’s SpaceX bought the popular AI coding company.

The change will not happen immediately. OpenAI plans to end its agreement with Cursor on November 12, 2026. Until then, developers can continue using existing OpenAI models through the coding platform.

There is another catch. Cursor will not receive OpenAI’s future models during the transition. The decision comes just weeks after SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor. It also adds another layer to the long-running dispute between Musk and OpenAI.

OpenAI Plans to Shut Off Cursor Access in November

OpenAI notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down its agreement with Cursor. The proposed cutoff date is November 12, 2026. OpenAI says this gives developers the maximum transition period allowed under the contract. Existing models will remain available during that window. Future OpenAI models, however, will not be added to Cursor.

SpaceX’s Cursor Acquisition Triggered the Decision

SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor on August 14. The deal valued the AI coding company at roughly $60 billion. Cursor had already been working with SpaceX before the takeover. The acquisition changed who controls the company, though. That gave OpenAI a contractual window to reconsider the relationship.

OpenAI Says Trust Is the Main Problem

OpenAI did not frame the decision as a technical issue with Cursor. Its concern centers on SpaceX and other companies controlled by Musk. OpenAI said it could not be confident that its technology would stay within agreed terms. The company pointed to previous contract disputes involving Musk-owned businesses. Cursor itself was not accused of violating its agreement with OpenAI.

OpenAI Also Raised Concerns About xAI

OpenAI referenced earlier problems involving xAI, which is now part of SpaceX. According to OpenAI, Musk acknowledged under oath that xAI had violated OpenAI’s terms of service. OpenAI used that history to explain its caution around future model access. The company also wants tighter control over how upcoming systems are deployed. That becomes more important as its newer models gain stronger capabilities.

Cursor Says OpenAI Models Represent Only 5% of Traffic

The impact on Cursor may be smaller than the headline suggests. Cursor CEO Michael Truell said OpenAI models account for about 5% of the platform’s user traffic. He also said Cursor and OpenAI were still discussing the situation. Cursor has worked with OpenAI for years and was an early customer of its models. The relationship has now become much more complicated.

Cursor Already Has Other AI Models to Fall Back On

Cursor does not depend on a single AI provider. Its coding platform has offered models from several major AI companies. That includes Anthropic and Google, alongside OpenAI. Cursor also has deeper access to technology from SpaceX and xAI following the acquisition. This gives the company room to shift traffic away from OpenAI if the cutoff goes ahead. Still, losing access to future OpenAI models removes one choice for developers.

SpaceX Is Building Cursor Into a Much Larger AI Strategy

SpaceX did not buy Cursor simply to own another software company. AI coding has become one of the clearest commercial uses for generative AI. Cursor gives SpaceX an established developer product with a large user base. SpaceX also brings enormous computing infrastructure to the relationship. Cursor said the acquisition gives it access to what it described as the world’s largest GPU fleet.

Cursor and SpaceX Were Already Working Together

The relationship started before the takeover. SpaceX and Cursor announced a partnership in April to develop a new system for coding and knowledge work. That agreement also gave SpaceX an option to acquire Cursor. The purchase became official several months later. By August, Cursor was fully inside Musk’s expanding technology group.

The Deal Puts OpenAI in an Awkward Position

Cursor competes with OpenAI in one of AI’s hottest markets. OpenAI has been expanding its own tools for software development. At the same time, Cursor has relied on OpenAI models to power some of its coding experiences. That arrangement was already unusual. SpaceX taking ownership made it even harder to ignore. OpenAI would effectively provide frontier technology to a company inside Musk’s competing AI ecosystem.

Musk and Altman’s Dispute Is Still Hanging Over Everything

The commercial argument is difficult to separate from the history between Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Musk helped establish OpenAI but later became one of its loudest critics. Their disputes have moved through lawsuits, public statements, and increasingly direct competition. SpaceX now owns xAI and Cursor. OpenAI, meanwhile, is building competing models and coding products. The rivalry is no longer just personal. Their businesses are colliding in more places.

AI Model Access Is Becoming a Competitive Weapon

There is a bigger story underneath the OpenAI and SpaceX feud. AI applications often depend on models owned by another company. A coding startup might build a huge business around APIs from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google. That works until corporate relationships change.

Cursor shows what can happen next.

A change in ownership can suddenly affect which models remain available. Providers can also become competitors to the companies using their technology. Developers then face a platform risk that has little to do with the quality of the software itself.

Cursor Probably Won’t Stop Without OpenAI

Losing OpenAI access matters, but Cursor is far from stranded. The company has its own technology, multiple model providers, and SpaceX’s computing resources behind it. It has also been expanding beyond the code editor itself.

Cursor recently launched Origin, a code-hosting platform positioned as an alternative to GitHub. That move pushes Cursor deeper into the developer workflow. It is becoming more than an interface for third-party AI models.

The OpenAI-Cursor Split Shows How Fast AI Alliances Can Change

Only a few years ago, OpenAI and Cursor looked like natural partners. Cursor needed frontier models. OpenAI wanted developers building useful products on top of its technology.

Then Cursor became huge. SpaceX bought it. Suddenly, that old partnership looked very different.

The November cutoff gives Cursor time to adjust. It also gives developers time to decide which models they want to use next.

What happens after that could tell us something larger about the AI market. Companies are no longer competing only on model quality. They are competing over distribution, developers, compute, and who gets access to whose technology.

That makes model access a business weapon in its own right.
