UAE Grants $1.5m to Scientists for AI-Driven Rain Enhancement

The United Arab Emirates has awarded research grants to scientists working on advanced rain enhancement methods. The funding is part of the UAE Research Programme for Rain Enhancement Science, which is overseen by the National Centre of Meteorology. Each selected project will receive $1.5 million over a three-year period.

The awarded research focuses on improving rainfall in arid environments. Scientists will explore the use of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and environmental design to enhance cloud formation and precipitation. These approaches aim to complement existing cloud-seeding techniques used in the country.

One area of research involves nanoparticles designed to interact with clouds more efficiently than traditional seeding materials. Researchers will study how these particles influence cloud droplets and rainfall formation. Another project will use AI models to analyse weather data and predict the best conditions for rain enhancement operations.

The programme also supports studies on landscape reshaping. This research examines how changes in terrain or surface features could influence local weather patterns and rainfall. Scientists will use simulations and field data to assess how these interventions affect cloud development.

Artificial intelligence plays a central role across the projects. AI tools will process large volumes of meteorological data to improve forecasting accuracy. Machine learning models will help identify optimal locations and timing for rain enhancement activities.

The UAE launched its rain enhancement research programme in 2015. Since then, it has funded multiple international research teams. The programme aims to address water scarcity by advancing scientific understanding of precipitation processes.

All project proposals were reviewed by an international committee of experts. The evaluation focused on scientific quality, feasibility, and potential impact. Selected teams come from universities and research institutions in several countries.

The research will be conducted over three years. Scientists are expected to publish findings and share results with the global scientific community. The programme also encourages collaboration between researchers and meteorological agencies.
