OpenAI is making one of its more interesting ChatGPT changes in a while, and this time the biggest part of the update isn’t reserved for subscribers.

ChatGPT Free and Go users are getting GPT-5.6 Luna as their default model, along with unlimited text conversations. Paid users aren’t being ignored either. Plus and Pro subscribers are moving deeper into the GPT-5.6 lineup with access to the more capable GPT-5.6 Sol and new controls over how much reasoning the model uses.

The change matters because OpenAI isn’t simply introducing another model name. It’s putting a newer GPT-5.6 model into the hands of people who don’t pay for ChatGPT — without the usual text-chat cap hanging over every conversation.

GPT-5.6 Luna Becomes the Free ChatGPT Model

GPT-5.6 Luna is now rolling out as the default ChatGPT experience for Free and Go accounts. Luna sits on the lighter end of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 family. OpenAI describes it as the fastest and lowest-cost model in the lineup, while Terra occupies the middle ground and Sol is built for more demanding work.

That positioning helps explain why Luna is the model OpenAI can push much more aggressively to free users. And there’s a fairly big catch-free part to the announcement: ordinary text conversations are becoming unlimited for free accounts. That doesn’t mean everything inside ChatGPT suddenly has no restrictions.

Uploads, images and other advanced features can still carry separate usage limits. OpenAI also maintains safeguards and system-dependent restrictions, so “unlimited” is best understood as unlimited regular text chatting rather than unlimited access to every tool ChatGPT offers. Still, that removes one of the more visible differences between casual free use and paid ChatGPT.

Free Users Are Also Getting a Think Button

There’s another change coming to the free experience. OpenAI says Free and Go users will receive a Think button for questions that need more reasoning. Instead of instantly producing an answer, users can ask ChatGPT to spend more effort working through the problem.

The feature is expected to use GPT-5.6 Luna rather than giving free users access to GPT-5.6 Sol. That distinction matters. Sol remains a paid-tier model in standard ChatGPT conversations.

But the experience is becoming less binary than before. A free user can use Luna for quick everyday questions, then explicitly ask the same model to think harder when the problem deserves it. That’s probably more useful to the average person than another complicated model picker.

GPT-5.6 Sol Takes Over More of the Paid ChatGPT Experience

Plus and Pro users are getting a different version of the upgrade. GPT-5.6 Sol is being integrated more deeply into ChatGPT’s reasoning experience, with paid accounts able to choose different levels of reasoning depending on the task.

OpenAI currently positions Sol as the flagship model in the GPT-5.6 family. It’s aimed at heavier work including research, coding, planning, science, cybersecurity, design and other tasks where the quality of the reasoning matters more than getting the fastest possible response. OpenAI is also introducing a reasoning slider for eligible paid plans.

Instead of constantly thinking about which model should answer a question, users can decide how much computational effort they want ChatGPT to put into the response. A quick question doesn’t need the same treatment as debugging a complicated program or researching a business decision. That’s the idea, anyway.

OpenAI Wants GPT-5.6 to Make Fewer Factual Mistakes

One less flashy part of the GPT-5.6 update may end up being the more important one. OpenAI has been focusing on factual reliability.

According to figures cited by Times of AI, OpenAI’s internal testing found responses containing at least one error were substantially less common with GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna than with GPT-5.5 Instant in tests involving areas such as finance, medicine and law. Those are OpenAI’s internal results, not independent benchmarks, so they deserve some caution. But the direction is clear.

The company isn’t only trying to make ChatGPT sound smarter. It’s trying to reduce mistakes involving things like numbers, dates, rules, assumptions and sources — exactly the small factual errors that can ruin an otherwise convincing answer. For everyday users, that improvement may be harder to notice than a new button. It’s also considerably more valuable if it works.

Unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna Could Change the Free AI Market

Making GPT-5.6 Luna available for unlimited text conversations puts OpenAI in an interesting position. Free AI products have traditionally come with an implicit tradeoff: use the newest model for a while, hit a limit, then either wait or pay.

Unlimited Luna weakens that pattern. Someone using ChatGPT for brainstorming, writing, studying, translating, basic research, everyday questions or casual coding may simply stop thinking about message limits. That creates pressure elsewhere too.

Google, Anthropic, xAI, Meta and a growing collection of open-model companies aren’t competing only over whose benchmark score is higher. They’re competing over how much intelligence people can actually use without reaching for a credit card. A capable model that is free and effectively always available can be more disruptive than a technically superior model sitting behind a tight usage allowance.

Paid ChatGPT Still Has a Reason to Exist

Unlimited free text doesn’t make Plus or Pro pointless. GPT-5.6 Sol remains unavailable to Free and Go accounts in standard ChatGPT conversations. Paid users also receive stronger reasoning options, additional model access and higher-end capabilities intended for more demanding workloads.

Pro users can go further with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro for particularly difficult or longer-running tasks. The split is starting to look less like “free ChatGPT versus the real ChatGPT” and more like different levels of computational effort. Luna covers a huge amount of everyday use.

Sol is where OpenAI wants people doing serious knowledge work. Sol Pro sits beyond that. It’s a simpler pitch than making users memorize a pile of model names — even though, ironically, OpenAI still has a pile of model names.

The Bigger Story Is Access, Not Another Model Launch

GPT-5.6 itself isn’t brand new. OpenAI introduced the GPT-5.6 family in July, including Sol, Terra and Luna. What’s changing now is who gets to use those models and how often. That’s why unlimited GPT-5.6 Luna access may prove more significant than the introduction of another flagship benchmark winner.

Most ChatGPT users aren’t comparing reasoning scores or calculating token economics. They open ChatGPT, type something and expect an answer. Removing the text-chat ceiling makes that habit easier. And once people stop worrying about whether the next prompt will hit a limit, free ChatGPT starts feeling considerably less like a demo.
