Qualcomm Soars as It’s Reported To Partner With OpenAI For AI Smartphone Processor Development

Shares in chipmaker Qualcomm soared after news broke about its potential partnership with OpenAI, which is expected to focus on AI smartphone processors for the years ahead.

Qualcomm Stock Soars Amid Reports Of AI Chipmaking Plans

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Qualcomm is cooperating with OpenAI to produce chips dedicated to future AI smartphones. This caused a dramatic increase in the price of Qualcomm shares in the first minutes of trading.

The deal between the two companies is expected to help Qualcomm strengthen its position in the fast-growing segment of artificial intelligence hardware.

OpenAI Expands Its Scope By Collaborating With Qualcomm On AI Hardware

OpenAI is known for being one of the leaders in the field of AI services and solutions for businesses. However, now it seems like it aims at developing AI smartphone processors as well.

As the reports suggest, OpenAI is planning to make use of the power of these processors to create AI smartphones capable of housing AI agents within them.

It’s worth mentioning that other tech giants including MediaTek are allegedly collaborating with OpenAI in order to develop AI smartphones with AI agents.

If this deal goes through, it means that OpenAI will start offering an integrated product range that includes both software and hardware components.

    Benefits of an AI Smartphone

The most important benefits of adding artificial intelligence features to smartphones are:

    • Having an AI agent available whenever it is needed
    • Ability to process complex calculations more quickly
    • Better security with privacy enhancements and less network activity

Experts say that an AI smartphone with a built-in AI agent could be the next big thing in consumer electronics, initiating a new upgrade cycle. Learn more about edge AI.

    Timeline and Industry Impact

According to sources, the process of designing these AI chips is still in its early phases, which implies that:

    • Their design will be finalized in 2026–2027
    • They will enter mass production around 2028

These chips are expected to shake up the competition in the segments of semiconductors and smartphones.

    Why Does It Matter?

This development shows that several things are currently happening in the industry:

    • AI going on the edge, i.e. more processing being done on devices
    • Hardware expansion efforts of Big Tech companies
    • The rise of AI smartphones with AI agents onboard

The dramatic increase in share price demonstrates that investors expect this project to pay off in the long run. Explore more about AI investment trends.

    Looking Bigger

There has been no official confirmation about this partnership so far. Nevertheless, there are many indications that it is really happening. In this case, it proves once again that AI-powered hardware is gaining popularity and companies are striving to be among the leaders in this area.

By collaborating with Qualcomm, OpenAI will have the ability to create next-generation smartphones with fully functional AI agents.
