Nvidia, the leading artificial intelligence chipmaker, has significantly bolstered its presence in China this year, adding around 200 employees to its operations in the country. Nvidia now employs close to 600 people in Beijing, with its latest office opening in the Zhongguancun tech hub, often dubbed “China’s Silicon Valley.” The expansion underscores Nvidia’s commitment to staying competitive in one of the world’s most important technology markets. Globally, the company employs about 29,600 people across 36 countries, as reported in its fiscal year 2024 filing.
Regulatory Challenges
Nvidia’s growth in China comes as it faces scrutiny over alleged violations of the country’s anti-monopoly law. The investigation, widely interpreted as a response to the U.S.’s tightening restrictions on Chinese chipmakers, casts a shadow over Nvidia’s operations in the region. Once a significant contributor to Nvidia’s revenue, China accounted for 17% of the company’s revenue in the year ending January 2024, down from 26% two years earlier.
