This week, OpenAI said it is planning to release an open-source language model for the first time in years. The creator of ChatGPT disclosed the news through a form requesting feedback for this strategy, saying it wants to hear from developers, researchers and the public to help it “make this model as useful as possible.” The open-source model would be coming “in months,” according to OpenAI. OpenAI said the last time it released an open-source model — meaning the model would be generally free to use, modify and distribute — was for the GPT-2 LLM in 2019. The startup is now at GPT-4.5. OpenAI…
Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) promises to improve operational efficiencies and the customer experience offered by enterprises. The advanced technology is finding applications in loan underwriting and fraud detection, and now it’s moving across borders. TerraPay Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Ram Sundaram told PYMNTS as part of the “What’s Next in Payments” series focused on exploring AI’s use in banking and by FinTechs that automated decision making and streamlined processes will continue to transform global money movement, especially as faster payments gain ground in cross-border transactions. That’s the inexorable trend, but as Sundaram put it, there’s still room, and a necessity, to have some human…
Google has removed the head of Gemini as its AI chatbot continues to lag behind ChatGPT. According to Semafor, Sissie Hsiao has stepped down to be replaced by Josh Woodward, the head of Google Labs who oversaw the launch of NotebookLM, the artificial intelligence (AI) tool that turns documents into two-person podcasts. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis reportedly he told staffers in a memo that the change in leadership will “sharpen our focus on the next evolution of the Gemini app,” according to Semafor. Hsiao told staff in a separate memo that her time atop Gemini constituted “chapter 1” of Bard — the Gemini chatbot’s old name —…
ServiceNow, a company that provides artificial intelligence (AI) agents for businesses, is set to acquire Logik.ai. The deal, announced Thursday (April 3), is designed to accelerate ServiceNow’s momentum in sales and order management with the help of Logik.ai’s configure, price, quote (CPQ) solution. Logik.ai’s best-in-class capabilities for sales and commerce will expand ServiceNow’s growth. “Companies in every industry struggle with ineffective sales processes due to complex product configurations, pricing inconsistencies, and error-prone manual quoting,” the companies said in a news release. “Sales teams waste valuable time navigating spreadsheets, outdated pricing models, and disconnected approval workflows, leading to delayed deals, lost revenue opportunities, and…
For years, U.S.-based tech companies have tapped into India’s vast and increasing internet user base for growth. OpenAI is no exception. But while the AI lab claims that India is one of its fastest-growing ChatGPT markets, third-party data suggests that OpenAI may be struggling to turn that momentum into revenue. According to analytics firm SensorTower, users in India have spent $8 million on ChatGPT subscriptions through in-app purchases since 2023. That doesn’t include purchases made through the ChatGPT web app. But notably, it’s a fraction of the $330 million SensorTower estimates U.S. users have spent on ChatGPT in-app. One likely factor is the…
Meta has released a new collection of AI models, Llama 4, in its Llama family — on a Saturday, no less. There are four new models in total: Llama 4 Scout, Llama 4 Maverick, and Llama 4 Behemoth. All were trained on “large amounts of unlabeled text, image, and video data” to give them “broad visual understanding,” Meta says. The success of open models from Chinese AI lab DeepSeek, which perform on par or better than Meta’s previous flagship Llama models, reportedly kicked Llama development into overdrive. Meta is said to have scrambled war rooms to decipher how DeepSeek lowered the cost…

Uttar Pradesh’s tiger reserves face pressure from rising wild cat numbers; AI cameras will track tigers in real-time to prevent human conflicts. The rise in the number of wild cats has put tiger reserves in Uttar Pradesh under pressure, but the growing incidents of tigers wandering out has compelled the forest department to use the most advanced tool artificial Intelligence (AI) in the uninhabitable core forest zone. The most recent such incident was in Lucknow’s Rehmankheda where a tiger kept wandering for 91 days before being caught on March 6. The start is from Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) that stood…

A new study appears to lend credence to allegations that OpenAI trained at least some of its AI models on copyrighted content. OpenAI is embroiled in suits brought by authors, programmers, and other rights-holders who accuse the company of using their works — books, codebases, and so on — to develop its models without permission. OpenAI has long claimed a fair use defense, but the plaintiffs in these cases argue that there isn’t a carve-out in U.S. copyright law for training data. The study, which was co-authored by researchers at the University of Washington, the University of Copenhagen, and Stanford, proposes a new method…
GitHub Copilot, Microsoft-owned GitHub’s AI coding assistant, could soon become costlier for some users. On Friday, GitHub announced “premium requests” for GitHub Copilot, a new system that imposes rate limits when users switch to AI models other than the base model for tasks such as “agentic” coding and multi-file edits. While GitHub Copilot subscribers can still take unlimited actions with the base model (OpenAI’s GPT-4o), tasks and actions with newer models, like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet, will now be capped. Customers on the Copilot Pro ($20 per month) tier will receive 300 monthly premium requests beginning on May 5, GitHub said in a blog…
On Friday, Google released API pricing for Gemini 2.5 Pro, an AI reasoning model with industry-leading performance on several benchmarks measuring coding, reasoning, and math. For prompts up to 200,000 tokens, Gemini 2.5 Pro costs $1.25 per million input tokens (roughly 750,000 words, longer than the entire “Lord of The Rings” series) and $10 per million output tokens. For prompts greater than 200,000 tokens (which most of Google’s competitors don’t support), Gemini 2.5 Pro costs $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. That pricing makes Gemini 2.5 Pro more expensive for developers than any other AI model currently offered…
For its 50th birthday, Microsoft is teaching its AI-powered Copilot chatbot a few new tricks. Copilot can now take action on “most websites,” Microsoft says, enabling it to book tickets, reserve restaurants, and more. The bot has gained the ability to remember specific things about you, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, like your favorite food and films. And it can now analyze real-time video from your phone, answering questions in the context of what it “sees.” The upgrades come as Microsoft is reportedly mulling a revamp of Copilot, which has historically been powered by AI models from OpenAI, with more of its own in-house technology.…
After effectively canceling the consumer launch of its o3 reasoning model in February, OpenAI now says it aims to release both o3 and a next-gen successor, o4-mini, in “a couple of weeks.” In a post on X on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the reversal in course is related to OpenAI’s upcoming GPT-5, which the company has previously said will be a unified model incorporating reasoning capabilities. “[W]e are going to be able to make GPT-5 much better than we originally thought,” Altman wrote. “[W]e also found it harder than we thought it was going to be to smoothly integrate everything. [A]nd we want…
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s text-generating AI chatbot, has taken the world by storm since its launch in November 2022. What started as a tool to supercharge productivity through writing essays and code with short text prompts has evolved into a behemoth with 300 million weekly active users. 2024 was a big year for OpenAI, from its partnership with Apple for its generative AI offering, Apple Intelligence, the release of GPT-4o with voice capabilities, and the highly-anticipated launch of its text-to-video model Sora. OpenAI also faced its share of internal drama, including the notable exits of high-level execs like co-founder and longtime chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and CTO Mira Murati. OpenAI has also been hit with lawsuits from Alden Global…
