A recent survey by the American Medical Association (AMA) indicates a growing enthusiasm among physicians for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare practices. The study, conducted in November 2024 with 1,183 physicians, reveals that 35% of respondents now express more enthusiasm than concern regarding healthcare AI, up from 30% in 2023. Additionally, the proportion of physicians whose concerns outweigh their enthusiasm decreased from 29% to 25% over the same period.
The survey highlights that 68% of physicians in 2024 perceive definite or some advantages to utilizing AI technology, a slight increase from 65% in 2023. Notably, AI adoption in clinical settings has risen significantly, with 66% of physicians reporting AI use in their practice, compared to 38% the previous year.
Physicians identify the reduction of administrative burdens as a primary opportunity for AI application, with 57% citing this as a key benefit, up from 56% in 2023. AI tools are particularly valued for tasks such as documenting visit notes and generating discharge instructions, which can streamline workflows and enhance efficiency.
Despite the growing optimism, physicians continue to express concerns about data privacy, the potential for flawed AI tools compromising patient information, challenges with electronic health record (EHR) integration, and the risk of incorrect AI-generated recommendations. To bolster confidence and encourage adoption, surveyed physicians emphasize the need for increased oversight, robust data privacy assurances, and seamless EHR integration.
Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H., immediate past president of the AMA, stated, “The AMA survey illustrates that physicians are increasingly intrigued by the assistive role of health AI and the potential of AI-enabled tools to reduce administrative burdens, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and personalize treatments.” However, he also acknowledged the ongoing concerns regarding privacy risks, EHR integration, and liability issues associated with AI implementation.
As AI continues to evolve within the healthcare sector, addressing these concerns through comprehensive oversight and robust data privacy measures will be crucial to ensure that AI tools effectively support physicians and enhance patient care.
