BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo is taking a big step forward in artificial intelligence by creating a new department. It’s focused not only on the tech of AI, but the people impacts too.
AI is already in our phones, our cars, and even many of our jobs. Now, UB is building a department to make sure students understand how to use it the right way.
The department is called ‘AI and Society,’ and Governor Kathy Hochul said the state will invest $5M to launch it this fall as part of a bigger push called Empire AI. Most of that money will go toward hiring new faculty members. The rest will go towards setting up the technology and tools students will need to explore what’s possible.
“That particular infrastructure, that resource is going to be located at UB’s north campus. So when we say Empire AI, it’s this computing infrastructure, it’s promising to be the most powerful computer structure anywhere in the world when it comes to academia at UB and those are the kind of resources one needs in order to advance in AI. That’s where the field is going,” Venu Govindaraju, PhD, VP for research and economic development at UB said.
UB’s Faculty Senate is expected to vote on the final approval for the new department a week from today. If passed, AI and Society will officially launch this fall. Learn more here: https://www.buffalo.edu/ai-data-science.html
