IBM Study: More And More Indonesian Companies Switch To AI Open-Source To Improve ROI

The latest research from IBM (NYSE: IBM) found that Indonesian companies surveyed invest in artificial intelligence (or artificial intelligence AI) in the long term and have high interest in open-source movements to encourage ROI (return on investment) and innovation.

Studies involving more than 2,400 information technology decision makers worldwide, conducted by Morning Consult and Lopez Research, show that 85% of respondents reported progress in implementing AI strategies in 2024, with nearly half (47%) already making it to the positive ROI of their AI investments. The data also shows that the use of open-source devices for AI solutions has the potential to provide more promising financial prospects: 51% of companies using open-source AI applications report positive ROIs, compared to only 41% of companies that do not use open-source devices.

Nearly 48% of respondents from Indonesia stated that they will increase their AI investment by 2025, while 57% plan to take advantage of an open-source ecosystem to optimize AI implementation. Globally, among companies that have not used open-source, 2 out of 5 stated that they plan to start using open-source for AI implementation by 2025.

“Along with the wider implementation of AI, many companies are now focusing their metric on increasing productivity because some ROIs in traditional financial benefits have not been fully reflected in financial reports,” said Maribel Lopez of Lopez Research.

Even so, these companies continue to develop their AI strategy without any signs of a slowdown. They are increasingly realizing the importance of defining the right AI implementation, optimizing AI projects, and leveraging hybrid and open-source cloud strategies to encourage AI innovation, as well as increasing financial gain.

The findings of this study emphasize that companies in Indonesia continue to accelerate AI adoption, particularly through open source AI, to optimize investment and innovation. IBM has long contributed to its open source movement to help businesses take advantage of technological power through safe and responsible solutions. We are dedicated to driving a real business impact, ensuring our customers can effectively improve their AI initiative while maintaining long-term compliance, security and sustainability,” said Roy Kosasih, President Director of IBM Indonesia.

Further study findings include:

Open-source is an important crucial part of the company’s AI strategy

7 out of 10 (73%) Indonesian IT decision makers surveyed reported that they had used the open-source ecosystem as the basis for AI development, and this trend is expected to continue to increase in the coming year.

56% of Indonesian respondents reported that more than half of the solutions or AI platforms in their companies were open-source based.

Globally surveyed companies adopting an open-source ecosystem have a greater chance of achieving a positive ROI than those who do not use it (51% vs. 41%).

At the global level, companies that take advantage of the open-source ecosystem plan to launch more AI pilot projects in the coming year than those that don’t: 38% say they will launch more than 21 AI pilot projects by 2025, compared to 26% in companies that don’t use open-source in AI development.
