Indonesia has officially proposed to host the AI Global South Forum, an initiative led by UNESCO to promote responsible AI development in emerging economies across Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific. This forum aims to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that developing nations benefit from AI advancements while maintaining ethical and sustainable technological growth.
Indonesia’s Leadership in Ethical AI
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to fostering an inclusive AI ecosystem that aligns with ethical standards and human rights. He highlighted Indonesia’s milestone achievement as the first Southeast Asian country to complete UNESCO’s Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM)—a framework that evaluates a nation’s preparedness for responsible AI implementation.
During a meeting with Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, on February 11, 2025, in Paris, Patria reiterated Indonesia’s dedication to AI governance. He acknowledged UNESCO’s support and guidance in helping the country develop AI policies that prioritize ethics, fairness, and social responsibility.
“Indonesia’s commitment to responsible AI development has been recognized globally. Hosting the AI Global South Forum would be a significant step in strengthening AI cooperation among developing nations and fostering sustainable innovation,” Patria stated.
UNESCO’s Support and AI Forum Goals
UNESCO welcomed Indonesia’s proposal and encouraged further preparations to ensure a successful event. Gabriela Ramos praised Indonesia’s progressive approach to AI governance, stating that hosting this forum would position the country as a leader in ethical AI development.
The AI Global South Forum is expected to:
✅ Promote AI accessibility – Ensuring developing nations gain equal access to AI-driven solutions.
✅ Foster cross-border collaboration – Encouraging knowledge-sharing between Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific.
✅ Advance ethical AI policies – Strengthening AI regulations and governance tailored to developing economies.
✅ Support AI-driven economic growth – Empowering local startups, industries, and governments to leverage AI for socioeconomic development.
Indonesia’s Role in AI Advancement
By taking the lead in AI policy discussions, Indonesia seeks to bridge the technology gap between developing and developed nations. The forum will serve as a platform for policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to exchange ideas, set regulatory frameworks, and explore AI’s role in economic progress.
Indonesia’s active engagement with UNESCO highlights its commitment to leveraging AI responsibly, ensuring that the Global South can harness AI’s potential without ethical compromises. The AI Global South Forum is expected to lay the foundation for AI strategies that align with international best practices while catering to the unique challenges of developing nations.
With growing global interest in fair and inclusive AI policies, Indonesia’s leadership in hosting this forum could position it as a key player in shaping AI ethics, governance, and development on an international scale.
